Patients with benign ulceration of the gastric body show emptying rates which tend to be slower than normal. There is considerable overlap with the range of emptying rates observed in normal individuals, and in many gastric ulcer patients, there is no evidence of emptying abnormality. However, the possibility that pyloric dysfunction occurs in patients with gastric ulcer is of interest in the context of the biliary reflux often encountered in these patients. Although there is presently no experimental evidence that incoordination of the antro-pyloro-duodenal contraction is a feature of the gastric ulcer patient, the idea remains attractive.
